Breakfast at Morning Star Cafe
Address:
711 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417
Hours:
6:30 AM - 2:30 PM daily
I love Morning Star Cafe so much I had them do a pancake bar for my high school graduation party!
If you come to Grand Haven and you don’t eat here, you are missing out! Morning Star Café, hands down the best breakfast spot in town. This beloved local gem is bright, colorful, and full of energy, with eclectic decor—including an entire wall covered in chunks of broken Fiesta Ware, creating a unique, mosaic-like design.
Important Tips
A heads-up: it gets busy fast, and if you arrive after 9 AM, you’ll likely have to wait (but trust me, it’s worth it!).
Free parking is available in the lot across the street.
If you do have to wait, you can order a drink with the hostess or at the bar. Their coffee is a special brew from Magnum Coffee, rich and bold—perfect for fueling a full day of exploring. Or if you're looking to start your day with a little extra fun, Morning Star Café serves alcohol, too! Whether it's a classic mimosa, a spicy Bloody Mary, or something seasonal, they’ve got you covered.
Morning Star Cafe Recommendations
If you’re a sweet breakfast person, don’t skip their massive cinnamon roll—big enough to share and topped with a thick, perfectly sweet cream cheese icing unlike anything you’ve ever had. My personal go-to? The Oatmeal Pancakes with Michigan Blueberries and Pure Michigan Maple Syrup—simple, delicious, and packed with local flavor.
Craving something savory? You can’t go wrong with the Veggie Breakfast Quesadilla or the Chilaquiles with house-made green chili pulled pork—both bold, flavorful, and made entirely from scratch.
No matter what you order, one thing’s for sure: you’ll leave absolutely stuffed and fully fueled for an amazing day in Grand Haven.

1:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Relax at the beach at Windsnest Park
Address:
7905 Margaret Ave, West Olive, MI 49460
Instead of fighting the crowds at Grand Haven State Park, do yourself a favor and head just a little south to Windsnest Beach—a true local hidden gem that offers a much more relaxed, intimate beach experience.
I know, I know—some people worry that sharing these special places will lead to crowds and ruin the magic. But I can’t help but let you in on this one. It’s where I go when I want to relax at the beach, and once you visit, you’ll see why!
If you do visit, please be respectful and help keep it as beautiful as it is today. There are trash receptacles available in the parking lot, so pack out what you pack in!
Why Windsnest PARK over Grand Haven State park?
Smaller, more intimate setting—you won’t be elbow-to-elbow with beachgoers.
Gorgeous restrooms (a serious upgrade from most beach bathrooms!).
A fantastic playground right next to the beach—perfect for families with kids.
Soft sand, clear Lake Michigan water, and stunning views.
Know Before You Go:
Parking is limited, and you’ll need a county park pass (different from a state park pass). You need a parking pass even if you are parking on the side of the road.
No lifeguards on duty—like all West Michigan beaches, you swim at your own risk.
No on-site food or drink vendors, so bring snacks, drinks, and anything else you might need. Alcohol is not allowed.
From wading in the waves to lounging in the sand, or just taking in the peaceful atmosphere, Windsnest Beach is the perfect spot to recharge before heading into town for the evening.
5 PM - 6:30 PM
Happy Hour at Off the Chain
Address:
1434 Colfax Ave, Unit 2, Grand Haven, MI 49417
After a sun-soaked afternoon at the beach, it’s time to hydrate at Off the Chain—Grand Haven’s first on-site distillery since Prohibition and the newest brewstillery in town.
With a gorgeous, modern vibe, this spot is a must-visit for craft drink lovers. They brew all their own beer, distill their own spirits, and even make their cocktail garnishes and mixers completely from scratch—meaning whatever you order, it’s going to be fresh and full of flavor.
Why You'll Love It:
Family-friendly, away from downtown, chiller vibe.
Handcrafted cocktails & house-brewed beer—you won’t find these anywhere else.
Not drinking? No problem. They also have a robust list of mocktails and house-made sodas, so you can still enjoy a refreshing drink without imbibing.
Live music on most weekends, setting the perfect happy hour vibe.
Feeling snacky? Most weekends, there’s a food truck parked outside, or you can order from The Unicorn Tavern right across the street.
Family-friendly, away from downtown, chiller vibe—a great alternative if you’re looking for something more relaxed.
Whether you’re winding down with a house-distilled cocktail, enjoying a cold craft beer, or just soaking up the atmosphere, Off the Chain is the perfect spot to kick off your Grand Haven evening.
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Dinner at Noto’s at the Bil-Mar
Address:
1223 S Harbor Dr, Grand Haven, MI 49417
For an unforgettable beachfront dining experience, head to Noto’s at the Bil-Mar—a spot that combines old-world Italian flavors with stunning Lake Michigan views. This is one of my husband and I’s favorite places to go for date night!
Seating Options:
Indoor Dining – A bit more upscale but no dress code, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a cozy, refined atmosphere.
Outdoor Patio – More casual and right on the beach, perfect for watching the sunset while you eat.
What to Order:
Their woodfired pizzas are next-level, made in true Italian fashion with premium ingredients and a perfect crisp.
Meatball appetizer (or make it a meal!)—rich, flavorful, and a favorite for a reason.
Seafood lovers, rejoice! They serve up fresh, perfectly cooked fish dishes that highlight the flavors of the Great Lakes.
Parking Tips:
They have one small parking lot right next to their building, so parking is limited. Here are close parking options if their lot is full:
Take the Beach Express shuttle and get dropped off at City Beach, then walk a few blocks down.
Drop your group at the restaurant and park at Grand Haven State Park (5-minute walk).
Overflow parking available at Lake Forest Cemetery (10-minute walk).
No matter where you sit, Noto’s at the Bil-Mar offers the only lakeside dining in Grand Haven. There’s nothing better than enjoying delicious food while watching the sun set.
9 PM
Watch the Musical Fountain
Address:
1 N Harbor Dr, Grand Haven, MI 49417
Wrap up your perfect day in Grand Haven with a little magic—aka the Grand Haven Musical Fountain! This free, family-friendly show has been lighting up the riverfront since 1962, with water, lights, and music all synced up for a seriously cool experience. Think of it as a mini Bellagio fountain, Michigan-style.
What to Know:
Start Time: The show begins at sunset, so the exact time varies throughout the summer. Plan to arrive early to grab a good viewing spot!
Cost: Free!
Best Places to Watch:
The Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium (prime seating right in front of the fountain).
The boardwalk along the channel for a different vantage point.
Pro Tip: Sweeten the Experience!
While you wait for the show to start, grab a scoop (or two!) of ice cream from Temptations or Norm’s Ice Cream—both are nearby and serve up classic, creamy Michigan-made ice cream.
The Musical Fountain is the perfect way to wrap up your Grand Haven adventure, offering a relaxing, fun, and totally unique way to close out the night.
